When UMC Groningen in the Netherlands decided to rebuild the hospital’s two phlebotomy sections, attention was focused on fast and secure transport of blood samples, easy installation, better workflow and easy handling for the phlebotomists.
Kor Kooi, Lab Manager at UMC Groningen, has been responsible for the introduction of the two Tempus600 systems at the hospital. He is very positive about the collaboration and implementation of the systems.
In 2013 Mr. Kooi heard about the Tempus600 solution for the first time. “I was surprised! I thought that Tempus600 could be the point-to-point system the hospital needed to transport the blood samples from the two new phlebotomy sections to the lab,” says Mr. Kooi. He discovered that the Tempus600 solution was very easy to install, and decided to find out whether it would be possible to buy the system and bring it to Groningen.
It was a lengthy process, as the department of Clinical Chemistry was not very enthusiastic. They were concerned about the hemolysis and the quality of the blood samples, so they had to be convinced. However, in 2015, the hospital was ready to install the first Tempus600 system in the Oncological department.
“The implementation of the system was easy. Some adjustments had to be made, and the staff had to get used to working with the system. But within two weeks it was up running and in operation the whole time,” explains Mr. Kooi and continues: “Each day 500-600 samples are sent from the department of Oncology, and there is no waiting time at all with the Tempus system. The staff is very happy with it, and they only need to be present by the Tempus600 sending station for a very short time – the time it takes to place the racks.”
In August 2016 the successful implementation of the Tempus600 system was followed by the installation of the second sending station in the ward. The implementation went smoothly and the system was functional from day one.
Within a year the two Tempus600 sending stations have sent more than 200,000 blood samples. Mr. Kooi is very satisfied with the new solution, as they have not had any unexpected breakdowns and the staff finds it easy and convenient to work with the system.
After the implementation of the Tempus600 solution a report was produced describing the validation of transport with the Tempus600 system at UMC Groningen. The results showed that for specified test values, the differences between the methods of transport fall within analytical variation, and the Tempus600 system was approved for transport of vacuum tubes.
Today, after four years, the rebuilding of the hospital is almost completed, and the plan is to buy a third Tempus600 sending station for the Emergency department in 2018. Because of the location in relation to the lab, the sending station is expected to be a great success and save a lot of time.
Mr. Kooi says that as a result of using Tempus600, they expect to save costs and increase efficiency in the departments involved in the process. Furthermore, he is convinced that when the new laboratory is finally completed in 2018, a new bulk loader for receiving the samples will be installed at the laboratory, and then they will really see savings and greater efficiency.
