Ospedale dell’ Angelo is a brand new, high-tech hospital in Venice, Italy. The hospital wanted to reduce patient waiting times in the Emergency Room (ER) and, at the same time, improve treatment with fewer resources available.
The Tempus600 system was solution to this challenge. Today, blood samples are sent directly, one by one, from the ER to the laboratory, thus speeding up the delivery, processing and the return of analysis results. According to Dr. Rosada, Head of the Emergency Room, the total turn-around time for blood samples has been reduced from 40 to 20 minutes with less resources involved. Staff must no longer carry urgent samples from ER to the lab - instead they can stay within their own department and take better care of the patients.
In December 2017, the new Tempus600 system was installed, tested and implemented in just a few weeks.
It is a simple and innovative transportation system connecting ER to the laboratory with a 2.5-cm diameter pipeline.
The Tempus600 solution has eliminated time-consuming packing and unpacking in special containers, when sending and receiving blood samples. The phlebotomist just places the tubes in the inlet of the sending station and it is in the hands of the laboratory technician within a few seconds.
The new innovative way of transporting blood samples replaces the handheld delivery that was previously carried out by staff. Blood samples were collected at a single point and placed in a special container. The transfer took place when necessary or when the phlebotomist had the time to walk to the laboratory with the container full of test tubes.
The emergency room requires approximately 350 samples per day. During peak hours, especially, it was often necessary for staff to manually transfer the samples:
Dr. Rosada, Head of ER, explained, "Once every twenty minutes, a nurse carried the samples to the laboratory and started up the analysis process. Now, the transfer is automated and the procedure begins as soon as the sample is registered by the scanner at the sending station and placed in the inlet of the system. The procedure is activated in real time, seamless between picking and processing".
Paolo Carraro, Head of the Analysis Laboratory, clarified further, "The system is connected to a computer present in the laboratory, which reports the transfer of all tubes from the ER, each with its own identification code. At arrival in the receiving box, the operator is informed about the arrival of new test tubes, or possible presence of test tubes arrived and not withdrawn, so they can continue the analysis process in real time”.
The total time saved, from sending the samples to the doctor receiving the test result, is 20 minutes per patient. This reduction, multiplied by 170 patients examined per day, will have a huge impact on the flow of patients, who are waiting to be diagnosed. It will assist hospital management with improving efficiency in the hospital.
“Basically, we save human resources because staff no longer have to spend time carrying blood samples to the laboratory. Consequently, doctors receive the test result earlier and there is less waiting time for the patients at ER.” says Dr. Rosada.
