A new internal transportation system has minimized the Emergency Room turn-around time for blood samples at Oulu Hospital, Helsinki - the second largest hospital in Finland.
Rapid transport of blood samples has helped Oulu University Hospital decrease the patients length of stay in ER. Within minutes of arrival, blood samples are drawn and transported from ER to the lab, thus reducing turn-around time for crucial samples. This results in turn-around times of around 20 minutes from samples being drawn until receiving the results of the analysis.
"The clinicians were so happy about the results of Tempus600, that they wanted to buy their own system for the ward. This is absolutely the best feedback that you can get from your colleagues." says Tiina Lehto, Clinical Biochemist, Joint Municipal Service Provider of Northern Finland Laboratory Centre (NordLab).
Tiina Lehto clarified further "The samples are transported faster and gentler than with traditional Pneumatic Tube Systems and thus the quality of the samples has improved." The Tempus600 system is integrated with a control screen which survey the arrival of the samples.
When the laboratory management heard about the Tempus600 solution, they went to Denmark to see how Tempus600 works. They were pleased with the efficiency of the system and, in 2016, hospital management decided to invest in the first Tempus600 Vita. The system was installed shortly after the decision to take Tempus600 Vita and the process went smoothly.
"The installation was on time - the supplier promised to install the whole system within 2 weeks and they completed the installation as promised. Everything went smoothly, there were no delays and we were very happy about that", says Tiina Lehto.
The samples are dispatched from the Tempus600 sending station in the ER, around 350 meters from the clinical laboratory. When the specimens arrive in the laboratory, 30-40 seconds later, they land in a Bulk Loader that automatically lifts them to the track system before they continue the journey through the analysis equipment.
Blood, serum and urine samples are transferred by Tempus600 to the laboratory. Due to the fast and light transportation provided by Tempus600, the quality of the samples is very good and the laboratory has not observed raised amounts of hemolyzed samples.
Implementing the Tempus600 solution has streamlined the handling of blood samples and the workflow has become significantly more efficient.
"Now staff don't have to pack and unpack the samples in canisters, instead they can concentrate on their primary tasks. There is a much better workflow and we have improved and optimized the processes and procedures. This fits in nicely with our lean thinking", explains Tiina Lehto.
Because of the positive effect of Tempus600 at ER, the hospital director came to see how the Tempus600 solution works and if it could be implemented in other departments of the hospital. So far, the hospital has bought 1 additional system, but there are already some thought and ideas for more Tempus600 solutions to be installed in other departments in the hospital.
